Starting out

You can apply for a provisional driving licence when you’re 15 years and 9 months old.
You can start driving a car when you’re 17.
Eyesight Check
You’ll have to read a number plate from a distance of:

20 metres for vehicles with a new-style number plate
-
20.5 metres for vehicles with an old-style number plate
We will ask you to provide us with a licence check code but we can help you with this.

Are you ready for your Driving Test?

What happens during the Driving Test
There are 5 parts to the Driving Test:

An eyesight check
-
General driving ability
-
Reversing your vehicle
-
Independent driving

The test is the same for both manual and automatic cars.

How long the test lasts​
-
You’ll drive for around 40 minutes.
-
You’ll drive for around 70 minutes if you’re taking an extended driving test.

There are apps available to download, the Official DVSA theory test kit has all the theory knowledge and Hazard Perception practice you need to get yourself ready

Get Ready to Pass
Passing your driving test gives you independence and freedom. But taking your test too early could lead to a failed test, disappointment, and potentially delays to you getting on the road.
